About Me
I am an assistant professor at The University of Alabama's Department of Advertising and Public Relations. My primary line of inquiry is based on conducting quantitative experimental design research surrounding crisis and risk communication through persuasion, new-media effects, and message strategy.
Both my teaching and research activities are heavily influenced by the six years I spent in the industry at in-house marketing departments and as an account executive at a marketing agency. This time provided me with hands-on experience with clients, helping them define and communicate their message, spurring my deep curiosity about how communication is understood. I strive to conduct research and create a teaching environment that empowers both future and current practitioners in the industry to succeed.
Topics that I have recently examined include dissemination of misinformation and disinformation impacting both organizational reputation and health behaviors, along with message strategies to reduce psychological reactance and risk perceptions. Previous projects I have led have received both regional and international recognition, including the top research paper award, best paper for conference theme, and top ethics paper at the International Public Relations Research Conference. In addition, I have had work published in Public Relations Review, Health Communication, Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, and Journal of Applied Communications.
Before receiving my Ph.D. at the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, I received my Master of Science in agricultural communications from Kansas State University (‘17) and a Bachelor of Arts in public relations and minor in leadership from Kansas State University (‘12).
